The origins of Halloween are said to be in the Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. For the Celts, who celebrated their new year on November 1, the festival of Samhain marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter.
The Celts believed that on the day before the New Year, the ghosts of those who had passed away returned to Earth.
